Tsvangirai to attend Mandela burial – report

12 December 2013, 18:06

Cape Town – Zimbabwe’s former prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai is reportedly scheduled to attend the burial of Nelson Mandela at his home in Qunu on Sunday.

News Day reported on Thursday that although it could not be ascertained whether Tsvangirai had been invited by the South African government to attend the burial, his spokesperson Luke Tamborinyoka maintained that arrangements were being made for him to travel to Qunu.

Tamborinyoka said in the African culture people did not need to be invited to attend a funeral, adding, however, that SA was aware of his planned attendance.

Tsvangirai was one of the first people to pay tribute to Mandela after news about the struggle icon's death broke last week.

Mandela died on 5 December at his home in Houghton, Johannesburg. He was 95.

In his condolence message, Tsvangirai urged Africa to “continue to produce more Mandelas”.

Mandela will be buried at his home in Qunu on Sunday.

Friends, colleagues, comrades and family of Nelson Mandela are invited to share their memories and tributes, and to light a candle for him, on his profile at Remembered.co.za
