Togo delays parliamentary election

10 July 2013, 15:55

Lome - Togo's government announced that the legislative election due to be held on 21 July will now take place on 25 July, a delay meant to address the concerns of the country's increasingly vocal and united opposition.

In a statement read Tuesday on state TV, the government said the much-delayed poll is being rescheduled to hold a free, fair, transparent and violence-free election.
Candidates are vying for 91 seats in the next parliament. More than 3 million voters are registered.

The small African nation of Togo has been ruled by the same family for 46 years, first by Eyadema Gnassingbe, then by his son Faure Gnassingbe, who won a deeply flawed election in 2005 as well as the 2010 vote.
