Tension ahead of EU-Africa summit

01 April 2014, 16:33

Cape Town – Ministers from the African continent have already gathered in Brussels for a two-day EU-AU summit scheduled to kick off on Wednesday, a report said on Tuesday.

According to eNCA, tension filled the air as there appeared to be cracks between the European Union and Africa relations following what some African leaders called "dictation" by the EU on who is eligible to attend the summit.

Sudan on Sunday accused the EU of trying to divide Africa after President Omar al-Bashir was not invited to the summit.

Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide in Sudan's Darfur region, where conflict has raged for 11 years.

Zimbabwe's call

Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe will be boycotting the summit after his wife was denied a visa to enter Europe.

Harare had urged the AU to shun the summit for failing to invite all the bloc's leaders and lift a ban on Zimbabwe's first lady.

But the AU rejected Zimbabwe's call, although Mugabe's regional ally President Jacob Zuma downsized the delegation to the summit from presidential to ministerial.

EU also barred Eritrea from attending the summit. Another full AU member, the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic, was also not invited.

The EU has maintained that only those with a role to play in meetings at the summit had been invited.
