Soldier, police officers die in Mogadishu attacks

30 June 2014, 08:37

Mogadishu - One soldier and two police officers were gunned down on Sunday in the Somali capital despite security forces saying they had beefed up security in the face of militant threats during the Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

Suspected members of the Islamist extremist group al-Shabaab who were armed with pistols shot the two police officers from a moving vehicle in Mogadishu, police said.

Earlier, three suspected al-Shabaab fighters shot and killed a soldier in northern Mogadishu, according to local government officials and witnesses, who said the soldier's AK-47 assault rifle was taken by the assailants.

Senior al-Shabaab official Sheikh Ali Mohamed Hussein, who is responsible for the group's operations in Mogadishu, said his group is ready to redouble attacks on government and African Union military installations in Mogadishu during Ramadan.

A senior Somali security official in the capital said that in response to al-Shabaab threats, the government has deployed an additional 500 special forces troops in the city during Ramadan under the slogan "Break the Fast in Peace".
