Johannesburg - A mother from the South African capital of Pretoria has revealed how she and her daughters were intimidated and harassed by a group of drunken men in an ordeal that traumatised her so much she lost her unborn child.
Elizabeth Matshaka was six weeks pregnant when she, her two daughters and their nanny, were driving through city streets on Saturday evening, reported The Pretoria News.
A car with five drunken men pulled up next to her at a traffic light and she shook her head at them as they were clearly drunk.
This set the men off and they first tried to run her off the road, then poured alcohol over her car, yelling racial insults, damaged her car and smashed a window when one of her daughters attempted to take a picture of them on her cellphone.
“They started insulting me, saying I was driving a car that was on credit and as a black woman, I could afford nothing,” Matshaka was quoted as saying.
Pretoria police eventually arrested the men after they found them trying to remove the car’s licence plates.
They were charged with crimen injuria, malicious damage to property and the driver was facing drunk driving charges.
Matshaka and her children have been sent for counselling.
The morning after the incident, she was in a lot of pain and bleeding profusely. She subsequently lost her baby and doctors blamed the trauma on Saturday night for her miscarriage.
She said she was shocked to discover on Monday that the men had already been released on bail.
