Johannesburg - The South African who was killed in a shopping mall attack in Kenya was shot once, The Star newspaper reported on Monday.

Capetonian businessman James Thomas, 57, was in Kenya for business when Islamic gunmen attacked the Westgate mall in Nairobi on Saturday, killing dozens of people.

Speaking on behalf of his family, Dave Meldrum, a pastor from Mowbray, told the daily that Thomas had been shot in the attack.

His family had been waiting for news on him since Saturday afternoon, after being informed that he had gone missing.

He went to the mall on Saturday afternoon with colleagues.

"They had just come out of a supermarket when James wandered off from the group. When the attack happened, he had been separated from his colleagues.

"We got a call around 17:00 on Saturday to report that he had gone missing...

"It was a really difficult time for his family and friends."

The family was notified of his death just after noon on Sunday. He had been shot once.
