SA hostage held in Somalia turns 50

31 October 2011, 11:03

Durban - The South African couple who are being held hostage by Somali pirates have for the first time been able to both call home since their capture a year ago.

The SABC reports that Bruno Pelizzari and Debbie Calitz told Pelizzari’s sister, Vera Hecht, that they were well but hungry and desperate for their release.

Pelizzari’s hair was apparently falling out due to the poor diet.
The couple’s kidnappers have demanded a $4m ransom, but so far only R100 000 has been collected by family and friends.

A spokesperson from an aid agency working in Somalia has said that there were negotiations under way with the kidnappers for an exit strategy, to help the kidnappers save face while at the same time freeing the South Africans.

Calitz turns 50 on Tuesday.
