Sierra Leonean mayor held on links to mutiny

27 August 2013, 11:03

Freetown - A spokesperson for Sierra Leone's main opposition party confirmed that the mayor of the city of Bo, the second largest in the country, was detained for questioning in connection with rumours of a planned mutiny.

Sierra Leone Peoples Party secretary-general Sulaiman Banja Tejan-Sie said that Mayor of the city of Bo, Harold Tucker, was taken away on Monday evening "for questioning by the police in connection with subversive activities".

The government recently launched an investigation into a meeting that was rumoured to be planned between senior military officers, aimed at destabilising the democratically elected government.

Although Sierra Leone just held its second election deemed transparent, the West African nation of nearly six million is still recovering from a civil war which ended in 2002.
