Put people first, Mugabe urges African leaders

12 November 2014, 13:48

Cape Town – People should not get into politics for selfish and personal interests but for service to the people, Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe said during his address to mourners at the late Zambian leader Michael Sata's funeral in Lusaka on Tuesday.

Mugabe, who attended Sata’s funeral in his capacity as the Southern African Development Community (SADC) chairperson, was joined by other African leaders from Kenya, Madagascar, Namibia and Mozambique.

According to The Herald, Mugabe said the greatest tribute that Zambians could give their late leader was to continue his great works.

Mugabe said Sata had embarked on many infrastructure development projects aimed at improving living standards.

A report by New Zimbabwe.com quoted Mugabe as saying Sata was a man of the people who believed in service for the people.

Sata died at the age of 77 while undergoing treatment for an undisclosed illness in London.

Sata is Zambia's second leader to die in office. In 2008 Levy Mwanawasa died in France after an illness.

Sata, nicknamed "King Cobra" for his acerbic tongue, has been replaced by Vice President Guy Scott until an election is held within 90 days of his death.
