Johannesburg - Seven awaiting trial prisoners overpowered police officers and escaped from the Lenasia Magistrate's Court on Monday afternoon, Gauteng police said.
Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said Brendon Paul, Johnson Leroy, Romeo Beukes, Luvesh Veerasmy, Dumisani Selepe, Thabiso Sebelwane and Mpho Ramatsoale appeared in court before the escape.
"It is alleged that the prisoners overpowered police officers working at the court cells and broke the main door to make their escape," he said.
"They were appearing for cases committed at Lenasia, Eldorado Park and Ennerdale."
All were appearing on charges of housebreaking and theft, except Beukes, who was charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Dlamini said a team of detectives and crime intelligence officers were deployed to trace the men.
"An internal investigation is also being conducted to establish if the escape of these prisoners was through negligence or not," he said.
"Anyone who may have assisted the prisoners to escape will face a criminal case as well disciplinary actions that may result in being discharged from the service."
