Post-mortem reveals goat was raped and strangled

26 June 2015, 14:23

Johannesburg - A post-mortem report has confirmed that a goat that died in Vereeniging last week had been raped, the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) said on Friday.

"A post-mortem report received yesterday from an independent laboratory confirms that the goat was raped and strangled, which resulted in the death of the animal," the SPCA said in a statement.

The goat's alleged rapist remained behind bars.

At around 18:30 last Friday, a shepherd caught the man red-handed when he heard the goat frantically bleating, spokesperson Major Mack Mngomezulu.

"The man undressed himself and then caught the goat, strangled it and started to have sex with it.

"The goat started to scream and then a shepherd shouted for assistance," Mngomezulu said at the time.

Members of the community came to the shepherd's aid and assaulted the man.

"He was rescued by police who took him to the hospital," Mngomezulu said.

The SPCA was called in. The goat was found alive but died shortly thereafter.

Meanwhile, the alleged rapist had since been discharged from hospital and was in police custody.

He was expected to appear in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on July 2 where he would face charges of bestiality and animal cruelty.
