Niger 'briefly issued passport to Gaddafi aide'

13 March 2012, 09:48

Tripoli - Niger issued a passport to a top advisor of slain Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi but later revoked it, a senior Nigerian military official said on Monday.

Speaking in the Libyan capital, Colonel Djibou Tahirou said his country had issued a passport to top Gaddafi aide Saleh Bashir who oversaw Libyan investments in Africa.

"Niger issued the passport under the advice and pressure of a European nation, which I will not name here," Colonel Djibo Tahirou told journalists on the sidelines of a regional conference on cross-border security.

"It is true that the passport said he was a [political] advisor although he never was," one to the government of Niger, he said, adding that the passport had since been revoked.
