New cabinet 'a challenge for Mugabe'

02 September 2013, 16:11

Cape Town – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe is set to name his cabinet this week, a month after he and his Zanu-PF party were swept back to power in a landslide victory, a report says.

According to newzimbabwe.com, analysts say the cabinet could be Mugabe's last as they speculate that he might stand down and let a younger leader from within his party finish his new five-year term.

Mugabe announced last week through a government gazette that the newly-elected members of parliament would be sworn in on 3 September, with the first sitting scheduled for 17 September.

The new cabinet presents Mugabe with a major challenge as he tries to strike a balance between young and old.

The veteran leader is however, expected to retain the nucleus of his loyal inner circle including.

Since 2009, Zimbabwe has been under a coalition government which saw three parties – Zanu-PF, MDC-T and MDC – all contributing cabinet ministers.
