Namibia awaits final results, 3 days after polls

01 December 2014, 14:59

Windhoek - Three days after Namibia's elections only about 51 percent of ballots had been counted by Monday morning.

The results were supposed to be made public on Sunday evening, but the chief elections officer announced a postponement shortly after 21:00, which was broadcast live on national broadcaster, the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation.

"We wanted to announce the results tonight [Sunday] but we are still verifying and auditing results, but we want to do it in a proper time and will announce the results on Monday," chief elections officer Paul Isaak said.

"We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience."

The ruling Swapo appears to be heading for a landslide election victory, having taken 77.5% of the votes counted so far. The party's presidential candidate Hage Geingob is leading the race with 87.1% so far.

The electoral commission is due to announce final results later on Monday.
