Mugabe: I also need pay hike

17 March 2014, 15:09

Cape Town – Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe has reportedly revealed he is looking forward to a pay hike, as he told Finance Minister Patrick Chinamasa and Public Service Commission (PSC) chairperson Mariyawanda Nzuwah to honour their commitment to award civil servants salary increments on 1 April.

According to a New Zimbabwe.com report, Mugabe, who was speaking at a belated 90th birthday luncheon organised by PSC, said he was eagerly awaiting the adjustment.

Mugabe warned his treasury chief against pulling an April Fools' prank after the minister said the hike would be effected next month, the report said.

"Even the president is also a worker – 1st of April don’t fool us," Mugabe was quoted as saying.

Critical economic situation

The veteran leader promised to double wages for State workers as he campaigned for re-election last year, a pledge the cash-strapped government has yet to meet more than six months after the vote.

A report by The Zimbabwe Mailsaid Mugabe indicated it was his wish to have all public servants adequately compensated and that the promise would be honoured.

The report said, however, that economists had expressed doubts over whether a salary increment was feasible unless government found "attainable means to grow revenue streams".

Zimbabwe is currently faced with a critical economic situation with Chinamasa revealing recently that the country's reserves would only be enough to buy 1 400 tons of maize.
