Johannesburg - A 42-year-old man received a life sentence for burning down his girlfriend's home while she was inside.
Tommy Vincent Ngoveni had been convicted of murdering his girlfriend Lorain Vuma by buying five litres of petrol, pouring it under her shack door, and then setting it on fire, Moroka police Captain Mpande Khoza said.
Ngoveni also received two sentences of 15 years each on two counts of attempted murder after her 2-year-old child and her sister Tinyiko Violet Vuma were seriously injured.
They were rescued by a neighbour.
Ngoveni fled to Limpopo afterwards, but was caught after a long investigation by Lenasia south detectives.
The case was then taken to a court in Soweto, where it was transferred to the High Court in Johannesburg which is currently sitting at Palm Ridge Magistrate's Court.
On Tuesday, he appeared in the court and pleaded guilty to the charges against him. He was then sentenced. In addition to the life term, and the two terms of 15 years, he also received 10 years for arson. The sentences will run concurrently.
