Malawi debate 'fails to tackle homosexuality'

10 March 2014, 16:04

Cape Town – Malawi has reportedly held its first ever face-to-face broadcast political debate among running mates to the presidential candidates in the 20 May elections.

According to Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, the debate organised by the privately-owned Zodiak Broadcasting Station, comprised running mates from the country’s major political parties.

The candidates were asked how they would address various issues of national concern, among them, homosexuality, agriculture, and infrastructure development.

Political analyst Ernest Thindwa said the debate was a lost opportunity as the candidates seemed not prepared for the discussions.

Thindwa said candidates failed to come up with an action plan. He gave an example that candidates could not give their parties' position on homosexuality.

"None of the party came with a solution. Now we do not want to have a party which is not decided on an issue which citizens think it is important," Thindwa was quoted as saying.

Some Malawians, however, said the debate was an indication that Malawi's democracy was maturing.
