Libya: 2 cops injured in attack

13 December 2012, 14:37

Cairo - At least two policemen were injured in an attack on a police station in Benghazi in eastern Libya, local media reported on Thursday.

The assault was mounted late on Wednesday by unknown gunmen who hurled a bomb that hit a patrol outside the station, said Libya's state news agency LANA.

One suspect was detained following the attack, which destroyed the patrol vehicle and damaged the front of the building, a security official told the agency.

The official did not give details about the identity of the suspect or the motive for the assault.

The attack is the latest act of violence in Benghazi, which was the birthplace of an armed uprising that deposed the dictator Muammar Gaddafi last year.

In September, the US ambassador to Libya and three other American diplomats were killed in Benghazi in an attack believed to have been carried out by radical Islamists.
