Khama seeking EU attention - Zimbabwe

28 January 2014, 18:09

Cape Town – Botswana President Ian Khama’s comments about Zimbabwe’s 31 July disputed elections are aimed at getting the EU to extend its “illegal sanctions” on Zimbabwe, a government official has reportedly said.

The European Union is scheduled to meet next month to decide whether or not to lift sanctions that were imposed against Zimbabwe in 2002.

Khama was recently quoted as saying his country would no longer participate in future SADC and African Union election observer missions after he noted what he said were irregularities in Zimbabwe’s last year elections.

Khama criticised both the African Union and SADC for not pointing out the irregularities in the harmonised polls and accused the blocs of endorsing the elections even though they were not fair.

According to the Herald, Minister of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Minister, Professor Jonathan Moyo, said Khama was seeking the attention of the EU.

Moyo said it was not surprising that the usual voices that have traditionally supported sanctions against Zimbabwean “about this time of the year since 2003 are at it again ahead of the February 19 EU meetings in Brussels”.

He said the elections that Khama continued to talk about were history to progressive Zimbabweans who spoke in their “overwhelming numbers" in favour of President Robert Mugabe and Zanu-PF.
