Islamist-allied militia in Libya reject UN talks

30 September 2014, 19:56

Cairo - Islamist-allied militias in control of the Libyan capital say they reject the United Nations' call for a cease-fire.

The announcement followed the first round of UN-brokered talks between Libya's rival lawmakers on Monday.

The talks are an attempt to bridge the gap between warring groups that have left Libya torn between two governments and parliaments.

The Libya Dawn umbrella — which controls Tripoli and is affiliated with the militia from the western city of Misrata — says on its Facebook page that the way to end the fighting is to disarm its rivals and arrest their leaders.

Weeks of fighting by militias in Tripoli have led to the destruction of the city's airport and prompted an exodus of foreigners and diplomats from the city.
