Irina turns lethal in Mozambique

06 March 2012, 08:24

Maputo - At least one person died when Tropical Storm Irina lashed the coasts of Mozambique and South Africa with heavy winds and rains at the weekend, officials said on Monday.

"A tree fell on a house and the roof collapsed," killing an elderly man in Mozambique's southern Gaza province, said Rita Almeida, spokesperson for the national disaster agency.

Irina passed over the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar last week, killing one person.

In the South African city of Durban, beaches were closed as waves reached 3m, municipal spokesperson Thabo Mofokeng said.

Ships were ordered to remain in port.
