Guinea-Bissau poll marred by killing

20 March 2012, 08:17

Guinea-Bissau - The head of Guinea-Bissau's judicial police says that the country's former intelligence chief was assassinated hours after presidential election polls closed on Sunday.

Joao Biague, the director general of the judicial police, told the private Radio Pindjiguiti FM late on Sunday night that the police were investigating the death of Samba Diallo, the ex-intelligence chief.

A soldier who asked not to be named because he was not authorised to speak to the press said that Diallo received a late-night call. When he walked outside to take the call, armed men were waiting for him. The soldier says the men then shot him down in a hail of gunfire.

It is unclear if the assassination is linked to the election, which comes nearly three years after the country's president was assassinated.
