Fire erupts on Nigerian Shell pipeline

Lagos - Royal Dutch Shell PLC says a fire has erupted on one of its pipelines in Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta.
Shell spokesperson Precious Okolobo said in statement on Wednesday that Shell's Nigerian subsidiary is working to put out the fire on its Okordia-Rumuekpe line in Bayelsa state.
Okolobo said some of the production has been shut and that an investigation would determine the cause and impact of the fire.
He said the company received reports of a spill on the line on Tuesday, but the fire erupted before the spill had been stopped.
Oil spills remain common in Nigeria's Niger Delta, more than 50 years after the country saw its first well open. Nigeria is a major supplier of crude oil to the US.
