Egypt: At least 200 mostly Islamists sent to trial

05 February 2014, 11:24

Cairo - Egypt's prosecutor general is referring nearly 200 people to trial, including top leaders of the ousted president's Muslim Brotherhood group, over accusations including murder, forming armed gangs and orchestrating jailbreaks.

Hisham Barakat's Tuesday decision covers one of the largest numbers of detainees in a single case, and adds to a growing number of cases against Mohammed Morsi's group since his ouster in a popularly-backed military coup in July.

The new case involves 191 defendants, including Brotherhood spiritual leader Mohammed Badie, and former Islamist lawmakers. They face charges of murdering five people, attempting to murder 70 others, and attacking a police station in a Suez Canal city during riots following the violent dispersal by security forces of the pro-Brotherhood protest camps in Cairo that killed hundreds.
