Johannesburg – A taxi driver was arrested in Patensie in the Eastern Cape on Wednesday morning, after 50 children were found crammed into his 15-seater minibus, police said.
Lieutenant Loaan Steenkamp, the commander of the local detective branch, pulled the minibus over at 07:30 for reckless driving.
"Fifty school children between the ages of 6 and 12 years old got out of the vehicle,” said Warrant Officer Gerda Swart.
She said Steenkamp had been driving to work when he noticed the vehicle on Fred Ferreira Avenue.
The 31-year-old driver was arrested and will face charges of reckless or negligent driving, as well as overloading, in the Hankey Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.
