DRC: Norwegian says proven innocent

29 August 2013, 14:40

Oslo - The cell mate of a Norwegian national found dead in a Democratic Republic of Congo prison earlier this month said on Wednesday that an autopsy had proven him innocent.

Joshua French, a friend of Tjostolv Moland, whose body was found at Kinshasa's Ndolo military prison on 18 August, had told a Norwegian newspaper earlier that Congolese authorities were investigating him as a suspect.

French told Norway's TV2 on Wednesday that he had been informed there was no case against him as the autopsy report stated that Moland's body showed no signs of violence.

"They do not suspect anybody of any crime and believe that no criminal act caused the death," he said.

French said it was "absurd" to believe that he could have killed Moland.

Moland, 32, and his friend French, 31, who has dual Norwegian-British nationality, were arrested in DRC in 2009 and sentenced to death in June 2010 after being convicted of killing the Congolese driver of a car they had rented.

The men, both former soldiers, denied the charge and said the driver was killed by bandits. They said they had come to DRC to set up a security firm.
