Johannesburg - A police officer has been arrested for allegedly raping a woman at the Linden police station, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said on Thursday.
The incident was reported to have happened in the early hours of June 28 when the woman was at the station because of fraud charges, IPID acting spokesperson Grace Langa said.
"She was taken to the police station and [her alleged attacker] allocated her a cell. She told us he told her she would be his wife for the night and he raped her," said Langa.
Later that morning, the woman told officers who had come in for the new shift about what had happened.
She was taken to the clinic for medical treatment while the officer was arrested.
He appeared in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on a charge of rape.
The matter was then postponed to July 7 where the accused was expected to apply for bail.
"He is in custody at the same station where he worked," said Langa.
The woman was moved to another prison for her own safety.
