Church rejects proposal to ban ‘Silent Night’

14 January 2015, 11:34

Potchefstroom - The Reformed Church of SA has rejected a proposal that the song "Silent Night" not be sung anymore, Netwerk24 reported on Tuesday.

"Have a good laugh and do what you want," an irate Dr Hennie van Wyk reacted at the synod in Potchefstroom on Monday, after various speakers rejected his complaint.

Van Wyk had argued that the song, which begins with the words "Silent night, holy night", and includes the line "Christ the Saviour is born", sanctifies the night of Jesus's birth.

Van Wyk wanted to vote against the use of the song, but this was rejected by a large majority.

In his written complaint he argued that there was no cultural-historical evidence linking the birth of Jesus to a particular month and year.

Various speakers said the word "holy" had a wide meaning and that nowhere in the song is it claimed that Jesus was born on 25 December.
