Lagos - Gunmen have kidnapped a Roman Catholic priest in southern Nigeria and it was unclear if a ransom had been demanded, police said on Wednesday.
"The armed men kidnapped the Reverend Father Sylvester Chukwura from his residence in the early hours of Tuesday. His whereabouts are still unknown," the deputy police chief of Edo state, Hurdi Mohammed, told AFP.
The kidnappers have contacted the priest's family once, but Mohammed could not say if they demanded a ransom.
He was abducted from his parish residence in Eguaholo, on the outskirts of the Edo state capital, Benin City, and police were making efforts to secure his release, Mohammed said.
Edo is part of the oil-producing Niger Delta region, where kidnapping for ransom is common. At least three other clerics are known to have been abducted and later released unharmed in the past two years in the region.
