CAR's new PM urges reconciliation

27 January 2014, 12:50

Bangui - The new prime minister of Central African Republic says he will meet with all fighting factions to bring an end to atrocities throughout the country.

Speaking to reporters after meeting with the new interim president on Sunday, Andre Nzapayeke stressed the need to promote national reconciliation and improve dire living conditions.

More than 1 000 people have been killed and nearly one million forced from their homes since December in violence pitting Christians and Muslims, militias and civilians.

Interim President Catherine Samba-Panza's office on Saturday announced the appointment of Nzapayeke, a former regional banking official who said he will name his full team soon.

Reports of clashes in Bangui on Sunday underscored the immensity of the task facing the new government following the resignation earlier this month of coup leader Michel Djotodia.
