Burundi still tense with protests as US sends diplomat

30 April 2015, 12:24

Bujumbura - Street protests against the Burundi president's bid for a third term are continuing.

Tom Malinowski, the US Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labour, said on Twitter that he is on his way to Burundi and that he is disappointed that President Pierre Nkurunziza is violating the 2005 peace accord.

Some protesters said on Wednesday they will continue until Nkurunziza drops his plans to run for re-election in polls on June 26. Nkurunziza has already served the two terms stipulated in the constitution.

Hundreds took to the streets on Sunday after Nkurunziza was nominated to be the ruling party's candidate. At least six people have died in clashes with the police.
