Burkina Faso parties propose role for army

10 November 2014, 13:01

Ouagadougou - A transitional period in Burkina Faso leading to 2015 elections should be headed by a civilian president, but include a government with members of the army, under a proposal by the nation's political parties and civil society leaders reported Monday.

The country has been seeking a way forward ever since the ouster of president Blaise Compaore 10 days ago.

The draft transition charter, made public late Sunday and reported by radio station Omega FM and other media Monday, says neither the transitional president nor members of the transitional government may contest elections due in November 2015.

The charter, drafted by about 100 representatives of opposition parties, civil society groups, religious and traditional leaders was due to be presented on Monday to the army, which took power after Compaore resigned on  31 October following massive protests.

The army will then propose its own charter in order to seek a consensus and to choose the civilian president, reports said.

Isaac Zida, the second-in-command of the presidential guard, took power after Compaore fled to Ivory Coast.

But the army has repeatedly said it does not want to hold on to power.

Compaore's critics accused him of having monopolised economic power during his 27-year rule.
