Ouagadougou — Burkina Faso's military says its forces are converging on the capital with the goal of disarming the junta behind last week's coup.
The military in the statement released Monday said their goal is to force the coup leaders from power without spilling blood.
However, as tensions mounted on the streets of Ouagadougou there were fears that the army's move could trigger clashes.
The soldiers who seized power last week belong to a presidential guard unit that is loyal to ex-President Blaise Compaore.
They said they were angered that members of Compaore's former ruling party could not take part in elections that were set for Oct. 11. Regional mediators are trying to seek a compromise deal.
