Biti: Chinamasa deserves to be in jail

23 October 2012, 09:17

Cape Town – Zimbabwe’s justice minister Patrick Chinamasa is "a justless minister who deserves to be in prison for uttering treasonous statements", Movement for democratic Change Secretary General and Finance Minister Tendai Biti said on Sunday.

This follows Chinamasa's recent utterances in a BBC interview that Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai would not win next’s year’s election and that his victory would be unacceptable because of his links to the West.

According to a Zimbabwe Mail report, Biti, who was addressing party supporters in Chitungwiza, said it was wishful thinking for the minister to think that he had power to reject an elected leader.

"Chinamasa is well versed with the constitution and he knows that election results should be respected. For him to incite a coup in Zimbabwe is treasonous which deserves jail time," said Biti.

Biti warned army generals that for them to think that they have the power to refuse saluting an elected leader has adverse implications with the law.

"We are poised for victory and we will not allow the next election to be stolen. The party is ready to defend the vote in the event that Zanu-PF refuses to hand over power in the forthcoming elections," he said.

Tensions are flaring up in Zimbabwe as the country gears for presidential elections which are scheduled for March next year to end the uneasy power-sharing government between President Robert Mugabe and Tsvangirai.
