Ban calls on African donors to fund CAR force

29 January 2014, 09:28

New York – The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon called on African nations on Tuesday to give full financial support to peacekeeping forces in the Central African Republic when donors meet this weekend.

In a statement attributed to his spokesperson, the UN leader welcomed the announcement of a new government in the strife-torn country and congratulated interim president Catherine Samba Panza and Prime Minister Andre Nzapayeke "for their efforts to put the transition back on track".

Ban reiterated that the UN was ready to "support the transitional authorities in their efforts to ensure the security and the welfare of the people of the CAR".

He welcomed the UN Security Council decision earlier on Tuesday giving European troops backing to use force in the Central African Republic.

Ban also stressed the importance of ensuring the success of the African-led peacekeeping mission in the country, known as MISCA.

"He appeals once again to all those in a position to do so to provide financial and in-kind assistance to MISCA and to announce their contributions at the MISCA donor conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia," on Saturday, Ban's spokesperson said.
