Algeria ex-leader in hint for president to quit

Algiers - Algeria's former president has issued a big hint that the ailing incumbent should withdraw from upcoming elections in April because of his failing health.
The statement by Liamine Zeroual, a former general who led the country from 1995 to 1998 during a bloody civil war against Islamists was carried on the front page of most newspapers on Thursday.
Though it did not specifically mention 77-year-old President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, the statement talked about the burdens of the office and the need to be in good physical condition.
Bouteflika suffered a stroke last year that has left his legs paralysed. Government officials insist his mental capacities are unimpaired but in brief TV appearances his speech has been slurred.
Bouteflika is running for a fourth term in office in the 17 April elections.
