African Union envoy meets Burkina Faso opposition

04 November 2014, 16:06

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso - A representative of the African Union is meeting with Burkina Faso's opposition leaders to discuss how to return the country to civilian rule after the longtime president fled amid protests and the military took over.

The African Union, representing 53 countries on the continent, gave the West African country two weeks to return to constitutional rule or face sanctions.

Burkina Faso's opposition, whose protests last week forced President Blaise Compaore from office after 27 years in power, is calling for inclusive talks to find a way out of the crisis. Opposition leaders met Tuesday with the African Union's envoy, former Togolese Prime Minister Edem Kodjo.

Representatives from the African Union, the United Nations and the West African regional bloc are trying to ensure a power vacuum doesn't destabilize the country.
