'Africa should produce more Mandelas'

06 December 2013, 19:11 Betha Madhomu, News24

Cape Town – Zimbabwean former prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai has urged Africa to uphold SA former president Nelson Mandela’s legacy, adding that the continent "should continue to produce more Mandelas".

Mandela died at his home on Thursday night at the age of 95

In a condolence message, Tsvangirai wrote on his official Facebook page that he had met once with Mandela and had a “frank exchange on the situation in Zimbabwe”.

“He told me that the country had taken a wrong turn and that President [Robert] Mugabe had led the nation to the brink of political and economic turmoil and that he would personally do all he could to persuade the Zimbabwean leadership to see sense,” said Tsvangirai.

“Unfortunately, his health deteriorated and now he has died with the Zimbabwean crisis taking a turn for the worst and with the country saddled with a legitimacy crisis arising out of yet another stolen election.”

Tsvangirai said the struggle icon had left an “indelible imprint but still continues to inspire our unarmed democratic struggle against oppression and unbridled repression”.

Tsvangirai urged Africa to “produce more Mandelas” who are selfless and think more about the welfare of the people.

Friends, colleagues, comrades and family of Nelson Mandela are invited to share their memories and tributes, and to light a candle for him, on his profile at Remembered.co.za.
