AU chief expected in Ivory Coast

Addis Ababa - African Union commission chief Jean Ping plans to visit the Ivory Coast by Friday to revive efforts to mediate an end to the west African country's post-election crisis, his spokesperson said.
"It cannot be ruled out that the chair of the African Union commission will travel to Abidjan in the next 24 hours to meet the various players in the Ivorian crisis," Noureddine Mezni told AFP.
He said the trip was planned but explained that it hinged on Ping's visit being accepted by all sides involved in the dispute that broke out after last month's elections.
Both Ivorian leader Laurent Gbagbo and his rival Alassane Ouattara claim to have won last month's presidential election, and both have declared themselves president, triggering fears of new chaos in a country already divided since 2002 into northern and southern armed camps.
