4 suspects found with albino bones arrested in Malawi

06 January 2016, 14:12 Cindy Pierce

Nyasa - Phalombe District police in Malawi have arrested four suspects who were allegedly found in possession of human albino bones, Nyasa Times has reported.

The arrest follows a tip-off from a businessman who was allegedly offered the bones in exchange for money from the suspects, among whom was one Mozambican national.

The suspects will appear in court soon on charges contrary to Section 16 of the Anatomy Act of Malawi. Investigations into the matter are currently underway.

Believed to possess magical powers, several reports have circulated of albino people being hunted down and killed, with their body parts being sold on the black market for profit.

According to a Yahoo! report, a teacher was arrested in Malawi in September of last year for attempting to sell an albino schoolgirl for $10 000.

In October 2015, four men were arrested for allegedly trespassing in a graveyard in Chisamiza Village. They planned to exhume the bones of an albino in order to sell the parts to an undisclosed buyer, a Nyasa Times report revealed.

According to a Daily Times report in May last year, four men were arrested in connection with the murder of an albino man in Malawi. The group allegedly sold the deceased's bones for purposes of witchcraft.

Although investigations into the root cause of citizens targeting albinos is underway, many remain unclear as to how to curb the trend currently plaguing the region.
