300 people lose jobs every week in Zimbabwe

25 November 2013, 14:39

Cape Town – At least 300 people are reportedly being forced out of work every week in Zimbabwe as the country continues to reel under an economic meltdown, the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says.

According to News Day, ZCTU said there was need for government to urgently address the crisis, saying the rate at which workers were being retrenched had reached alarming levels.

This comes against the backdrop of reports that several companies have folded over the past five years with the majority citing cash flow problems, the report said.

Last week the country’s youths decried the rate of unemployment in the country and called on government to take the issue seriously, as many students graduating from colleges and universities continued to languish in the streets with no jobs.

Zimbabwe’s unemployment is estimated at close to 90%, according to recent statistics.
