28 charged for attempted coup in Burundi

16 December 2015, 09:58

Bujumbura - Burundi's former defence minister together with 27 senior security forces officials appeared in court on Monday for their alleged  involvement in a failed coup in May, reports Aljazeera.

According to the report, the 28 men were escorted in court under heavy police guard in a small town 100km east of Burundi’s capital.

The Former Defence Minister Cyrille Ndayirukiye, as well as 27 police and army senior officials, are charged with “attempted coup and calling for a popular uprising, killing soldiers, policemen and civilians, and the malicious destruction of buildings”.

The accused claim to have been “ill-treated” in tiny police cells where they are using small buckets as their toilets, the report said.

The suspects could face a life time imprisonment if found guilty.

According to BBC , 87 people were killed on Friday in what is regarded as one of the country’s worst attacks since a failed coup against incumbent president Pierre Nkurunziza in May.

The army claims that those killed in Friday’s violence were criminals, the report said.
