2 Rwandans held while trying to smuggle $87 400 out of Zim

07 June 2016, 15:34

Harare – Zimbabwean authorities have reportedly detained two Rwandan nationals who were caught trying to smuggling at least $87 400 out of the southern African country.

According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, the two men were arrested at the Harare international airport as they were about to board the Ethiopian airways.

Police spokesperson Charity Charamba said that police officers on duty became suspicious because of the way the men were moving.

She said that one of the men had stashed some of the cash in his long socks causing him to limp when he moved.

The arrest came as the southern African country experienced cash shortages that began in April.

Reports indicated that corporate clients at some banks were only being allowed to withdraw $500 a day.

Furthermore, the country's central bank allegedly planned to force embattled businesses and traders to deposit their daily takings.

The central bank chief was quoted over the weekend as saying that those who did not bank their cash risked "losing their licence or incurring huge penalties".

A report by Chronicle newspaper cited Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa as accuding some of the SADC regional countries of "raiding" Zimbabwe's US dollar supplies.

Mnangagwa said some of the regional countries were taking the US dollar from his country as their own currencies were depreciating in value.
