$1m road repair for Bona Mugabe wedding

19 February 2014, 18:04

Cape Town – Zimbabwe’s Harare city council may have to fork out over $1m to upgrade roads that lead to President Robert Mugabe’s home in preparation for his daughter Bona’s wedding, reports say.

Bona, 24, is expected to tie the knot with pilot Simba Chikore at Mugabe’s mansion in Borrowdale on 1 March, local report said.

The wedding will be attended by over 5 000 guests, among them several African leaders and top government officials from the region and elsewhere.

According to The Standard, Harare city officials had been ordered to spruce up roads linking Zimbabwe’s state house to Mugabe’s private home.

At least $1m of ratepayers money was required for the job.

Cash constraints

The Sources said council employees were expected to work overtime and temporarily suspend other projects to meet the tight deadline.

This comes as most roads in the city are riddled with potholes, some of which now resemble craters as council is failing to provide essential services due to cash constraints, the report said.

A newzimbabwe.com report, however said the city’s mayor Bernard Manyenyeni had indicated he was not aware of the upgrading of roads “and if such a thing is happening it is happening without my knowledge and blessings”.

Manyenyeni said he would resist political directives which are detrimental to development in the capital.
