17 killed in Egypt bus crash

24 March 2014, 08:31

Cairo - Seventeen workers were killed on Sunday when their company bus overturned on the highway between Egypt's capital, Cairo, and the northern city of Alexandria, the state-run al-Ahram newspaper reported.

Two people were injured in the accident which took place near Beheira province, located some 160km north of Cairo.

Road accidents are common in Egypt and largely blamed on reckless driving and bad roads.

More than 12 000 people die in road accidents annually in Egypt, according to the World Health Organisation.

Earlier this month, 22 people were killed when a bus collided with a parked truck near the Suez city.
